In this op-ed, Judge Darlene Byrne speaks about the decision-making process in child welfare cases. For the past 15 years, Judge Byrne has presided over hundreds of cases and has had to decide whether to remove a child from their parent.

Child welfare judges spend a great deal of time listening to the stories of the children in our cases. A lesson she has learned is that among the thousands of abused and neglected children she has served over the years, it is rare when a child does not want to go home and reunify with their parents.

Judge Byrne believes that separating children from their parents can be more traumatic than abuse or neglect.
