Judge Katherine Delgado making a difference for Indigenous communities

          Judge Katherine Delgado, retired Colorado District Court Judge, is working as a consultant with Casey Family Programs and NCJFCJ, delivering training and technical assistance to ICWA Courts regarding judicial leadership, effective organizational structure, data collection and improved implementation of best practices for American Indian/Alaska Native children and their families. She recently met with six amazing and passionate ICWA Court Judges:

  • Judge Dusty Deschamps (4th District Court – Missoula, Montana);
  • Judge Bruce Manning (4th Judicial Juvenile Court – Minneapolis, Minnesota);
  • Judge Michelle Anderson (6th Judicial District Court – St Louis County, Minnesota);
  • Judge Andrea Janney (Klamath County Circuit Court – Klamath Falls, Oregon);
  • Commissioner Michelle Reesa (Spokane County Superior Court – Spokane, Washington); and
  • Commissioner Gabriela Shapiro (Los Angeles County Superior Court – Los Angeles, California)

The meetings resulted in a sharing of information regarding tribal engagement, stakeholder collaboration, courtroom décor, and ICWA gold standard practice in child welfare matters. These fabulous judicial leaders are willing to share their practice with each other and welcome the ability to connect with all ICWA Court Judges.
