Findings presented in this bulletin show that the number of juvenile arrests in 2016 was at its lowest level since 1980, with much of the decline occurring within the past 10 years. The bulletin describes the current arrest trends for juveniles from 1980 to 2016, using data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report. Overall, juvenile arrests have been on the decline for more than a decade, but patterns vary by offense and demographics. For example, while both male and female juvenile arrests declined in the last 10 years, declines have been greater for males in many offense categories. Also, while juvenile arrest rates for violent crimes such as robbery and aggravated assault have declined in the last five years, the juvenile arrest rate for murder has increased.
