Research suggests that the vast majority of parents involved in the child welfare system have experienced multiple traumatic events. This webinar will first present a basic overview of trauma to help participants understand what trauma really means, the extent of trauma in the population involved in the child welfare system and more generally, and the social and public health implications of trauma. Second, this webinar will discuss how exposure to traumatic events can affect physiological and behavioral responses, and how these responses, in turn, can affect parenting. The discussion will specifically focus on the effects of trauma on the parenting abilities of those who have experienced domestic violence, and implications for multidisciplinary professionals working with such families.
